AUGUST 2024
Barbès, Little Algérie au Cinéma
Barbès, Little Algérie is a film by Hassan Guerrar, released in October 2024. Starring Sofiane Zermani (Fianso), it tells the story of Malek, a man in his forties living in Montmartre, who welcomes his nephew arriving from Algeria. Together, they discover the Barbès neighborhood, a reflection of a “Little Algeria” in the heart of Paris. Between hardship, solidarity, and family memory, the film offers a realistic and human portrait of a district shaped by exile and popular culture.
The original score, composed by Armand Amar, prominently features the duduk, an instrument he greatly values and frequently uses. Its evocative sounds carry the audience toward the Orient and recall the Algerian roots of the story.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
In Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), composer Tom Holkenborg (alias Junkie XL) incorporated the Duduk, alongside other ancient and unusual instruments. With its deep and plaintive tones, the instrument brings an organic, “earthy” dimension that contrasts with the mechanical brutality of the Mad Max universe. The Duduk’s timbre emphasizes the human and tragic aspects of the story while enhancing immersion in this post-apocalyptic world.

Dune: Part Two in Theaters
"Dune: Part Two," released on February 28 and directed by Denis Villeneuve, continues the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic science fiction novel.
A sequel to the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Dune (2021), the film follows Paul Atreides as he joins the Fremen in seeking revenge against those who destroyed his family. The Duduk features prominently in the soundtrack, performed by Pedro Eustache, bringing a distinctive tone to the film’s sweeping desert landscapes and epic moments.

Gladiator II
Although the Duduk is not featured in this new installment, its impact on the universe of the saga remains indelible. Used in the first Gladiator to enhance moments of mystery, glory, and freedom, the Duduk marked a key milestone in its integration into Hollywood cinema. That era was pivotal for the global emergence of this ancient Armenian instrument, thanks in particular to the unforgettable performances of Djivan Gasparyan. His contributions opened the doors to wide international recognition of the Duduk and greatly supported its spread across the world.
